Which path is right for you? If you like fast-paced makeup, then runway fashion may be your thing. If you have an entrepreneur streak in you, you may want to be your own freelance makeup artist. Below we will break down some of the more popular career choices. You can always call us at (503) 244-1558 to help you get started on your makeup career goals.

    FREELANCE MAKEUP ARTIST

If you are ambitious, pro-active, have self discipline, and like the idea of working for yourself, a freelance makeup artist career may be the right fit. You own your own business, do your own bookings or have an agent book your jobs, and build your client base. You must negotiate rates, invoice, and collect payments. With all this responsibility also comes control. You have more control over the client’s fee and you can set your own rates. You also have more control of your schedule. You decide when you want to go on vacation!

    FILM & TELEVISION MAKEUP ARTIST

A career in film and television makeup requires a lot of skills. It is more than just beauty makeup. You must learn how to apply makeup for an HD camera that picks up the most subtle makeup applications. Makeup must look realistic for sharp close-ups on camera. Most of the makeup in this career will require an ability to enhance features with a light touch. Some films may require you to do cuts, bruises, apply bald caps, wrinkles or facial hair, so you may also need skills in special effects makeup. Advanced special effects artists learn how to work in a lab, creating prosthetic appliances that can be applied to the face and body to create a complete character transformation.

RUNWAY AND FASHION MEDIA MAKEUP ARTIST

Working in fashion is a very creative and expressive career. Runway makeup is extremely fast-paced and requires you to have your pulse on fashion. The key is to compliment the designer’s collection—not only the colors, but the theme. Key artists often get to design the makeup for the collection. If you like makeup that is bold and exciting, this may be the path for you. Fashion makeup artists also work on photo shoots for advertising, catalogs, and fashion stories in magazines. Music videos and touring bands also often require fashion makeup artists to keep musicians and dancers looking current and on trend.
